My UPD GE Subject Experience: Philippine Music Literature (MuL9) with Ms. Silvestre

Since gusto ko maka-experience na isang music subject sa UP, naghanap ako ng GE na about sa music. Merong MuL9 na Filipino music at MuL13 na World music. Dahil gusto ko 'in-sequence' ang order nang pag-take ng subjects and mas mukhang madaling i-digest ang Filipino music, nag-enlist ako sa MuL9.

In-Depth:

First Impression

Maganda naman ang first day sa class. Very kind and approachable si ma'am and magaling mag-explain.

Time Management

On-time mag-start and minsan lang mag-late dismiss.

Student Attendance

Nagche-check siya ng attendance at the start.

Recitation

This is required.

Quizzes and Exams

Kailangan mong i-memorize yung sound ng instrument, yung native name, and yung ethnic group nun. After that, merong written exam na minsan multiple choice, matching type, or essay.
Sa ethnic groups lang yung listening exam. Pagdating niyo sa Spanish and American music, wala nang listening exam.

Fun Factor

Merong voluntary class concert. Nung sa amin, merong Christmas concert just before mag holiday break and final concert at the end of the course.

Summary:

Pros:

* excellent and interesting topics in Philippine music from indigenous to modern Filipino rock
* extremely nice and approachable professor
* cool classroom (the minihall)
* voluntary class concert (show off your musical skills for extra credits!)
* Short and arguably easy Long Exams

Cons:

* listening exams (not a problem if you can memorize names and their corresponding sounds)
* required concert reviews (you need to travel high and low, searching far and wide for concerts to review)

Rating:

10/10 - If you're inclined to music, you might want to check this out.
